In the first place it is worth dealing with some of the obvious similarities. Firstly, electric mountain bikes have been developed mainly to be awesome bikes first and foremost. They are not and should never be practical options for cyclists who do not regularly ride long distances. However, many serious mountain bikers have discovered that they can still maintain their endurance levels by using an electric model.

The biggest advantage of electric mountain bikes is that they enable riders to increase the intensity of their rides without gaining additional effort. This is by all means a great thing provided that the rider knows how to use the equipment properly. One major mistake is often made is that riders don’t ride the e-mtb in the right order. Although the most basic programs allow this to be done, it is advisable to learn how to position yourself correctly so that you are enjoying your ride not suffering or getting impatient.

Some e-MTBs allow you to program several settings that allow you to vary the intensity of your ride. This is a very useful feature but there is one minor disadvantage. If you start out on a gentle pace then you won’t build up much speed and as a consequence your endurance level will gradually reduce. Another major disadvantage of e-MTB’s is that they don’t really provide a true mountain biking experience as there are no pedals. You can ride uphill quite easily with a non pedal driven mountain bike but you will find that the overall riding experience is not very satisfying.

So why should anyone consider electric mountain bikes? Well for many people the driving reason is that they want to have the same experience as if they were riding on a mountain without having to do the extra work. Electric bikes are great for anyone who wants to cut down on their efforts but wants the same quality of experience as if they were on a real mountain. Another big reason is that some people simply like the actual riding experience more than the technical aspects. E-bikes are generally lighter than standard mountain bikes and also enable you to reach new heights.

If you are going to use an electric bike, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with all the options available. There are basically two main types of electric mountain bikes – throttle and non throttle. Non throttle e-bikes allow you to regulate your speed by pedaling while the throttle on the other type allows you to adjust your speed manually. Both of these systems are relatively simple to master. There are also a range of e-machines available that not only allow you to ride on a level terrain but also develop your skills with various programs such as steep slopes or tight curves.

The next thing you should know about e-mountain bikes is that in general they use either gasoline or a battery powered motor. The difference between these two choices is basically the size of the motor. Gasoline e-bikes are generally lighter and are suited for use on flat terrain. The battery on the other hand is usually used when you go over rough terrain or cross country riding. Batteries do have their disadvantages however including the fact that you will need to replace the battery quite regularly unless you live somewhere that has a constant source of electricity.
